Turning Trash into Cash

we had a deeply rewarding engagement with our affiliate groups at Mida Creek, including the Juhudi Widows Mangrove Conservation Group, Upendo Women Group, and Uyombo Beach Management Unit, along with a newly formed cultural team dedicated to leveraging our rich traditions for alternative income generation. Together, these groups have cultivated 10,500 mangrove seedlings in two nurseries, aiming for 15,000 by month's end. To protect the environment, we initiated weekly plastic collections along the mangrove channels and beaches, with each member committed to filling 90 kg sacks with plastics from their homesteads. EcoWorld Watamu played a crucial role by educating the community about the severe impacts of plastic pollution on marine biodiversity and human health, setting precise targets for plastic collection by each household for accumulation, weighing, and purchase by EcoWorld Recycling. Our comprehensive strategy not only includes recycling plastics but also focuses on the commercial propagation of mangroves, eco-tourism, and showcasing our local culture, all aimed at providing sustainable livelihoods for these women and enhancing our conservation efforts. To support these initiatives, we distributed sacks for plastic collection and biodegradable potting bags for mangrove propagation, forging a path toward a more sustainable and prosperous community.
