CURRENT PROJECTS

With the support of Voices for Climate Action ,We are implementing  Mangrove restoration, Marine waste management and Environmental awareness projects between December 2023 and April 2024.

  • Mangrove Restoration:

The project involves erecting a mangrove nursery and training the community on mangrove restoration  on a transformative journey of providing alternative livelihoods to these women and promoting biodiversity protection. MFA is implementing a similar project in Marereni area ,a project that is spearheaded by youth s from the fishing families .This is the  cornerstone of our commitment to preserving coastal ecosystems. Mangroves are nature's frontline defense, providing critical protection against storm surges and serving as nurseries for countless marine species.

Join us in hands-on experiences, from planting saplings to maintaining thriving mangrove habitats. Through this project, we are not only restoring nature's balance but also fostering a deeper connection between communities and the resilient mangrove ecosystems that safeguard our shores.

  • Marine Waste Management:

More focus has been given to beaches thereby leaving tones of plastic waste in mangrove channels, MFA is implementing a project aimed at achieving zero plastic waste in mangrove channels and adjacent areas of Marereni and Kirepwe Island.  Through our research team that conducts plastic litter accumulation surveys, we conduct weekly cleanups along the beaches of Marereni and Watamu with the support of local partners. Coastal Cleanup Initiatives form the heart of our efforts, where community members unite to reclaim our shorelines from marine debris.

MFA is contributing to the tangible restoration of local ecosystems while gaining firsthand insights into the pervasive impact of plastic on marine life. Our commitment extends beyond cleanups – we actively advocate for responsible waste disposal practices and work towards building a future where our oceans remain pristine and thriving.

  • Environmental Awareness:

Mariners for Action (MFA) ignites passion for environmental stewardship through Environmental Awareness campaigns in schools within Kilifi County. We believe that knowledge is the catalyst for change, and we're dedicated to spreading awareness about marine conservation issues. We conduct workshops, webinars, and community events designed to educate and inspire.

From sustainable practices to the interconnectedness of marine ecosystems, our aim is to empower individuals with the knowledge needed to make informed choices. Through these initiatives, we cultivate a community that values and protects the environment, ensuring a sustainable future for our oceans and the life they support.

  • Ghost gear monitoring project

Mariners for Action (MFA) is inspired by Tangled seas  to actively engage in Ghost Gear Monitoring project. This ongoing initiative is designed to address the impacts of abandoned fishing gear on the critically endangered species that call this area home, notably the Indopacific humpback dolphins and green sea turtles. By closely monitoring, mitigating, and creating awareness, we aim to safeguard these species and maintain the rich biodiversity of this unique ecosystem.

Our primary objective is to systematically track and mitigate the consequences of abandoned fishing gear in Marereni Beach waters. A central aspect of our strategy involves active community involvement, fostering sustainable practices, and instilling a sense of responsibility among local residents.

  • Sea turtle mortality and stranding monitoring project

Mariners for Action (MFA)  works with key stakeholders in Kilifi county like Kenya Wildlife Service, Marereni Biodiversity Conservancy, Beach Management Units, and local Youth and Women Groups, in the active implementation of our Sea Turtle Mortality and Stranding Monitoring project.

This is project involves close collaboration with the Kenya Wildlife Service to ensures integration of our initiatives with broader conservation strategies. It involves regular patrols and surveys along Marereni Beach, documenting and responding to sea turtle mortality and stranding incidents. This collaborative approach enhances the efficacy of our data collection and empowers us to address critical issues affecting the local sea turtle population.
