What We Do

Our Focus

Mariners For Action engages in targeted conservation initiatives to safeguard our ocean and marine ecosystems. We collaborate with local stakeholders, including fishing communities, community groups, the private sector and the government to address specific challenges such as turtle conservation, mangrove restoration, and marine plastic waste management. Through these focused efforts, we work to protect endangered species like sea turtles, rehabilitate and expand mangrove forests, and reduce the impact of plastic pollution, all of which are vital for maintaining the health and biodiversity of marine environments.

Marine Waste Management - Coastal Cleanup Initiatives:

Within our comprehensive Marine Waste Management efforts in Kilifi County, MFA prioritizes biodiversity hotspots ranging from sea turtle nesting beaches Watamu to areas with critically endangered species such as the indopacific humpback dolphins in Marereni and Remote inhabited island of Kirepwe. These community-driven projects focus on the removal of marine debris, directly contributing to the restoration of local ecosystems. Participation not only addresses the immediate impacts of plastic pollution on marine life but also serves as an educational platform, instilling a sense of responsibility towards our coastal environments.

Mangrove Rehabilitation and restoration Projects:

MFA concentrates on preserving and restoring vital mangrove ecosystems in two priority areas of Marereni where the mangrove forest has been immensely destroyed through widespread illegal logging and  discharge of toxic chemicals and hypersaline water from the adjacent salt companies and Kirepwe Island where the Inhabited areas have been exposed to strong winds ,salt water intrusion in adjacent farmlands and massive decline in fisheries stocks due to mangrove deforestation . Mangroves act as a natural defense against storm surges, provide critical habitats for marine species, and contribute to carbon sequestration. Preserving these habitats. directly impact the health and resilience of our coastal areas.

Citizen Science Programs for Marine Research:

Coastal communities contribute towards MFAs monitoring efforts, collecting crucial data on biodiversity, water quality, and climate variables. By participating, they become an integral part of our research community, helping shape conservation strategies and advancing our understanding of marine ecosystems.

Community Empowerment Through Nature-Based Sustainable Solutions:

MFA promotes community empowerment through educational initiatives focusing on nature-based sustainable solutions. Our workshops explore sustainable practices grounded in the principles of nature. From eco-friendly waste management to promoting biodiversity conservation, these sessions empower community members with the knowledge and skills needed to make environmentally conscious choices, fostering a community culture centered on nature-based sustainability. This project has been extended to university students from Pwani University in Kilifi and nearby environmental clubs ion schools.

Sustainable Fisheries Advocacy:

MFA strives to raise awareness about responsible fishing practices. Through education and community outreach, we advocate for the preservation of fish stocks and marine ecosystems. By participating in these efforts, volunteers play vital role in ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of our marine resources. We have prioritized ghost gear monitoring in Marereni beach since 2022 Working closely with the fisheries department and beach management units

Enhancing Scientific Research:

Committed to advancing our understanding of marine ecosystems, MFA actively supports and engages in scientific research initiatives. Collaborating with experts and institutions such as Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute, Technical University of Mombasa Faculty of pure and applied sciences, Kenya Fisheries service, Kenya Forest research Institute and Kenya Wildlife service, we seek to enhance our knowledge of local marine environments, their biodiversity, and the impacts of human activities. By fostering partnerships and investing in cutting-edge research, we aim to contribute valuable data and insights that inform evidence-based conservation strategies and promote the long-term health of our oceans.
