Sea turtle mortality and stranding monitoring

"Hello there, would you please give me a little push"

In the heart of our conservation efforts, Mariners for Action (MFA) collaborates with key partners, like the Kenya Wildlife Service, Marereni Biodiversity Conservancy, Beach Management Units, and local Youth and Women Groups, in the active implementation of our Sea Turtle Mortality and Stranding Monitoring project at Marereni Beach.

We work together to carry out regular patrols and surveys along Marereni Beach. During these surveys, we document and respond to sea turtle mortality and stranding incidents as well as creating environmental conservation awareness to those we encounter. This collaborative approach enhances the efficacy of our data collection and empowers us to address critical issues affecting the local sea turtle population.

For example, working with Marereni Biodiversity Conservancy, we delve into the intricacies of the impact of plastic pollution on sea turtles. Together, we develop and implement strategies to mitigate plastic-related threats, combining our efforts to raise awareness and foster responsible waste management practices in the community. This partnership amplifies the reach of our educational initiatives, emphasizing the interconnectedness of local ecosystems and the global marine environment.

The collaboration with Beach Management Units strengthens our resolve to combat widespread sea turtle poaching. By working closely with local authorities and law enforcement as well as other turtle conservation groups (TCGs), we collectively implement surveillance measures, create clear understanding of governing regulations and penalties to deter illegal activities. Through community education programs facilitated by the Beach Management Units, we ensure that residents understand the consequences of poaching and their pivotal role in preserving the marine environment.

The local Youth and Women Groups are our main supporters, they join us in taking action for marine environment. Through tailored training programs, we strive to empower community members to actively participate in sea turtle conservation. These groups are slowly becoming better stewards of their own environment, contributing to beach clean-ups, reporting incidents, and spreading awareness about the significance of preserving sea turtle habitats.

Our collaborative efforts to  address sea turtle stranding monitoring not only strengthens the impact of our Sea Turtle Mortality and Stranding Monitoring project but also fosters a holistic approach to marine conservation.

Mariners for Action (MFA) welcomes individuals, volunteers, and partners to join hands with us, as we strive to create a sustainable and thriving environment for sea turtles at Marereni Beach.

"Together, we embark on a journey towards a future where the delicate balance of our oceans is preserved for generations to come; we are Mariners taking Action"
